Alanton Elementary School is located in the middle of the highly sought after neighborhood of Alanton in the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach. Alanton is consistently ranked among the top schools in the city and as Alanton residents we have had a wonderful experience as parents of children who attend the school. It has been said that a school is only as strong as the PTA. At Alanton, the PTA is extremely involved in making this one of the greatest schools in the city. There are a number of ways for parents to get involved in their child's education through the PTA. One example of this is the Watchdog program. The Watchdog program gives Dad's a chance to spend the day at the school engaging with the students and helping the teachers throughout the day. What a great way for a father to get involved in the life of their child while serving their community at the same time. Other opportunities include a long list of fun special events like the Monster Mash, the School Picnic and the Annual Spring Field Day. Every time you go to Alanton, you will see a smiling face. The staff and teachers are excited and proud of their school and this shows in the way they interact with the students and parents. Another program that I think is really special is the volunteer military program. Military service members from local military installations volunteer to spend time at the school. Dressed in uniform these individuals help get the kids off the bus in the morning and assist with the special events that take place throughout the year. The kids really enjoy seeing these brave men and women in uniform helping them at school. This also teaches our children the importance of volunteerism in the community and gives them a respect for our military. We can't say enough about this school. We have had such a wonderful experience here and it will be a sad day when the last of our three children leave to go off to middle school. We will always have a place in our heart for Alanton Elementary. Go Astros!!!
